Evidence-based relationship programs

pre marriage courses

The 'Let's Make It Work' is an evidence-based relationship program which will have a very positive effect on your relationship now and in your future life. It will allow you to share common experiences and issues at a comfortable level and raise awareness about your relationship now and in your future life as you transition in your relationship.

Couples can participate in a PREPARE Relationship Inventory (via appointment) which focuses solely on their relationship dynamic.

Areas explored in program:

Couples at each course choose the specific issues they wish to explore. Some popular choices are as follows:

  • Communication
  • Conflict resolution
  • Decision-making
  • Exploring relationship, familial and societal expectations
  • Designing a marriage that works for both of us
  • Mixing different cultural backgrounds and family influence
  • Recognising and meetings needs – your needs, my needs, our needs
  • Coping with stress
  • Budgeting and financial planning
  • Balancing work and family; adjusting to parenthood, twin careers, etc
  • Reasons for marrying

Marriage is a lifelong commitment comprising of many transitions. Obviously, lifelong learning continues well after the marriage ceremony, but our "Let's Make It Work" program aims to raise awareness of relationship strengths and encourages couples to discuss some of the critical and practical issues surrounding the marriage commitment. Assisting couples in the development of sound communication skills is at the heart of connecting.

Our relationship programs are run by experienced psychologists or counsellors working in the field of couple relationships; trained in Gottman Method Couples Therapy and Prepare/Enrich certification. They have a comprehensive understanding of evidence-based relationship theory and provide an interactive, insightful learning space for couples.

Cross-Cultural Counselling in Coburg

Have you ever considered the following questions? Ask yourself -

What does family mean to me?

What does culture mean to me? How will my culture impact on my relationship and family?

Which cross-cultural issues will affect me? (if any)

Which faith will I practice? When it comes to children, will they be christained - my faith or my partner's faith; or both?

If your answer is yes, you need to consider whether these issues are going to be problematic in the future as situations arise where a decision needs to be made and a clash of cultural wills may prevent logic and common sense to prevail.

Counselling services are available at RelateWell Centre in Coburg.

Some areas explored but not limited to:

  • Not being accepted by his/her family
  • Not living up to expectations and feeling inadequate or judged
  • Conflict about religious ceremonies
  • Over involved in-laws/parents
  • Isolation and feeling left-out
  • Being cut-off
  • Parenting/grandparenting issues
  • How to improve communication
  • Standing up for yourself without offending
  • Resolving conflict

The manner in which we understand, welcome and communicate difference as a couple will play a major role in determining how effectively we incorporate and deal with cultural issues as they arise in our everyday lives.

PREPARE Relationship Inventory

PREPARE - Building Strong Relationships

PREPARE Relationship Inventory helps identify important relationship dimensions, your strengths and the areas you would like to improve in your relationship. The first session involves each individual completing an extensive online questionnaire covering all facets of their relationship. The results and feedback are worked through with a certified Prepare/Enrich Facilitator who is also a counsellor or psychologist in the second session.

PREPARE Relationship Inventory involves two sessions and is completely private.

This is not a group workshop, and the second session is held either onsite at Coburg (Melbourne) or via video-call.
